17. CLASSICAL ATHENIAN STATESMANSHIP AND THE SPECTER OF DEMAGOGY

Panel Convenors

Aaron Hershkowitz (Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton) [ahershkowitz@ias.edu]

Michael McGlin (Temple University, Philadelphia)

The Attic arkhē represented a new type of administrative structure in Greek international affairs by virtue of its size, the scale of its military forces, and the magnitude of the resources required for its sustenance. This complexity motivated new forms of financial management, changes in the style of diplomatic relations, and, perhaps most significantly, an integration of alliance members in socio-economic and cultural praxis. Profound changes in political leadership emerged in this period which are often characterized, or, more properly (as some would argue) stigmatized by a diction made singular by terms built on dēmagōg-.

We invite a broad range of papers that address the nature of Athenian leadership in the period between the foundation of the Delian League in 478/7 and the end of the Social War in 355/4. We are especially interested in soliciting discussions of the phenomena of the dēmagōgos and dēmagōgia.

This panel represents the third meeting of The Working Group on Athenian Hegemony (established by Thomas Figueira). Our two previous occasions took place at meetings of the Celtic Conference in Classics, respectively in Edinburgh in 2010 (6th Conference) and in Montreal in 2017 (10th Conference). Please note Figueira & S. Jensen, eds., Hegemonic Finances: Funding Athenian Domination in the 5th and 4th Centuries BC (2019).

We are going to accept papers in English, French, and Portuguese. We will accept proposals of both 20 minutes and 40 minutes in length, reserving our right of acceptance at which length we deem most appropriate. Thomas Figueira will assist in the process of review. Applicants may direct correspondence to ahershkowitz@ias.edu.
